RIG INSPECTIONS AND REPLACMENTS
How old is the standing rigging? It is highly recommended that stainless steel standing rigging is replaced every 10 years. It is impossible to guarantee Stainless steel going by how shiny and new it looks, a lot of the issues happen on the inside, like a microwave meal, it can ‘cook’ from the inside out and fail when least expected. However, If the wire looks relatively clean with no excessive rust staining, which is a red flag in SS rigging, this is a good start. But it is worth bearing in mind the issues of fatigue that happen on the inside and are invisable till it breaks. That does not mean rigging older than 10 years is unsafe, all we are saying is that we are confident that upto 10 years you won’t have any issues, but after 10 years we just don’t know. so we like to err on the side of caution because a new spar is a lot more expencove than new rigging.
When excessive rust is present on swage terminals and wire, it an mean (but not always) here is damage inside the swage, weakening it. excessive rust staining can indicate a problem that needs addressing immediately. Where a spiral of rust is found along one or more strands of wire making it look like a Barbershop pole, this can indicate a broken strand inside the swage and shows evidence for immediate replacement. Rust is an indicator to damage to watch out for, excessive rust could be an issue. Minor rust staining can present no issues to be worried about.
A NOTE ABOUT HEADSAIL FURLERS AND RERIGGING
When changing the forestay during a rerig, it is necessary to remove the furler from the boat and change the old wire inside the furler for new. This can cause issues with old and obsolete furlers, for example, Seldèn furlex, especially type B and others like Rotastay furlers that are no longer manufactured and have been obsolete for more than 20 years. Furlers that terminate the wire with a swageless fitting inside the drum could refuse to come apart or refuse to reassemble with the new wire, meaning they need condemning and replacing with a new furler. We supply all manufacturers of furler but two of the types of furler we supply most often are Harken and Profurl, both these manufacturers produce furlers that are not integral to the strength of the forestay, unlike furlex or the old style harken furlers.
However, Be warned, if your furler is around 20 years old or more it might be necessary to replace the furler with new along with the forestay. Every effort will be made to reuse old kit to save customers money, but it could end up costing more, to work on an old and unusable furler that might need condemning, then to buy and fit a new furler. When an old forestay isn’t replaced for fear that the furler might not come apart, does not constitute a full rerig and a certificate of conformity cannot be issued, unless it can be proved the forestay is still relatively new. that
