ON THE CLYDE & WEST COAST

Ian & Charlotte live near Oban, but we’re mobile throughout the whole of Scotland, working in most marinas including remote sites like Inverness, Stranraer & Stornoway. 

We have a Clyde workshop in Kip Marina and we’re in Largs Yacht Haven weekly, so are perfectly placed to work in any of the Clyde marinas. Oscar regularly works from Portavadie Marina all the way down to Troon, Including Rosneath, Rhu & James Watt Dock.

Our Expertise At Work

Masts & Rigging

We are experts with replacing spars and standing rigging . We own two WireTeknik swage machines, an A350 & A270 working with wire from 2.5mm to 16mm in diameter.

Rig Tuning & Inspections

A tuned rig isn't just for racers. keeping your mast tuned is important for safety, as is spotting problems before they become either expensive or dangerous.

Running Rigging

Customised splicing for cruising and racing yachts. from standard braid on braid to high tech, modern fibres.

Marine Electronics

We undertake a lot of marine electrical work, from fitting masthead anemometers, lights and antenna, mast rewiring, to fitting radar and other navigation hardware to electric furlers and winches

New Furlers & Deck Hardwear

We supply & fit new Harken Mk 4, Profurl & Furlex furlers, Winches, Clutches etc.

Guardwires

An overlooked but essential part of any boats safety features, old guardwires can be a risk to safety and an eyesore

Ian Burton

I'm Ian, Yachtsman, Climber, Award winning adventure filmmaker & Rigger. I founded AYR in the summer of 2020. I've always had a passion for exploration yachts and blue water cruisers, but I love any yacht that cruisers or racers on the west coast.  One of the highlight of my sailing life was being invited to sail on PSP Logistics Clipper yacht when hosted in Oban. Each photo in this 'About Us' page of Myself, Charlotte and Oscar is from that day & I can say with confidence that all our smiles are genuine.

Charlotte Burton

Charlotte is at the helm of the Business and keeps us moving forward, she's the first point of contact on email and makes sure I'm in the right place at the right time.  She is a climber and adventurer and loves nothing more than getting into the mountains with Jess our dog, or anchoring up in a remote spot and climbing on a beach. Charlotte has had a 20 year career project managing clinical trials for the NHS & big Pharmaceuticals so will be bringing her experience project managing us here. 

Oscar Andrews

Oscar started with us in February 2023 and is a talented rigger, He brings a lot to AYR.  He works from our Kip Marina workshop and covers from Portavadie Marina, Holy Loch, to Rosneath, Rhu, Largs and down to Troon,  He is a natural rigger, and excels at tuning, splicing running rigging and, well pretty much everything on boats he turns his hand to.

Lachlan Davis

Lachlan joined us in early March 2026, working mainly out of  the Kip Marina workshop. He's a dinghy sailing instructor who has worked with Oscar before in Tighnabruiach sailing school. He has also worked In Austrailia teaching sailing and comes highly recommended. Every dinghy sailor i've ever met, including Oscar, has an instinct with the dynamics of sailing, which fits well with the technical side of rigging, so Lachlan will bring a lot to our team.

Great job done in the most trying of circumstances... caused by the incompetence of FedEx who failed to deliver the Harken furler which had to be picked up from their depot in GRETNA GREEN, a round trip of nearly 200 miles, further aggravated by the hottest days of the year. But the job was completed, as promised, with a smile on Ian's face. Thank you Ian and Charlotte for taking the time to come to Stranraer. A service second to none.
